As we recognize the undeniable value of all speech therapists this month, we take some time to shine a spotlight on one of our own: Amy Waters, SLP and Champion Level I Therapist from Ennoble Skilled Nursing and Rehab. As our May Clinician Who Inspires, Amy shares insight related to her learning experiences, creative treatment approaches, and paths to success in making an impact as a clinician in her community.
During her ten years as an SLP, Amy has come to realize just how important the role of a clinician is in the lives of the residents she serves. The road to becoming a resident of a skilled nursing facility is rarely an easy one; often presenting bumps and curves to physical, cognitive, and emotional wellness. Amy highlighted the opportunity that she and all clinicians have to build a relationship with residents, offer a familiar face, purposeful activity, and hope for functional improvement at a challenging intersection in someone’s life.
Within treatment, Amy employs function-based interventions with residents to ensure learned skills will carry over to everyday activities. As she’s encountered many older adults utilizing new forms of technology, Amy has adopted training through iPads and smartphones to assist in completing daily tasks and social engagement. She also regularly hosts a Jeopardy game with residents to walk through safety scenarios in various home environments.
Additionally, Amy discussed the importance of addressing health literacy with residents and caregivers to facilitate improved communication, needs identification, and care for various health conditions. She often shares one-page resources with residents, family members, dietary and nursing staff to assist with their understanding.
When asked for specific ways to be successful as a clinician, Amy encouraged an empathetic approach to providing care. “Let them talk. Let their voice be heard.” With an understanding of what the person is feeling and what they are going through, Amy is able to respond appropriately according to their needs, build trust, and better motivate her residents to participate in daily life.
Amy, your meaningful perspective, function-based treatment, and empathetic approach to care are truly an inspiration to your residents and all those around you. Your Care Matters!
